Peacemakers at Coventry Cathedral

‘Peacemakers’ was installed in the South Aisle of Coventry Cathedral in April 2022, below one of  Ralph Beyer’s carved inscriptions. Echoing the vibrant tones in Lawrence Lee’s window, the interactive installation offered a quiet, hospitable space, which drew visitors into the repetitive, contemplative, simple action of knitting on the loom.

The yarn was cast off after 10 days and 23 metres of it raised to the ceiling.  This temporary intervention remained in the cathedral for 40 days, a slender, knitted column, symbolic of the encounters and conversations shared around the loom.  The textile piece was then lowered, measured and all 209 metres rolled into a ball and gifted to the community who had created it.
